10 Things to Consider 13 Days Out
Posted by Katie Favazza - 07/23/08 at 01:07 amOn Tuesday, Missouri reporter David Catanese published a list of the ten things you “shouldn’t underestimate” about the primary race between Congressman Kenny Hulshof and state Treasurer Sarah Steelman, as they approach the end of their competition for the Republican governor slot on the ballot.
Here’s my own list of ten things to consider, for Missourians and for like-minded folks outside the Show Me State, especially those concerned about the state of the GOP come November:
- The Blunts, both Rep. Roy and Gov. Matt, are in the Hulshof camp. But Gov. Blunt has employed a significant amount of energy promoting government accountability. If Steelman really is the crown princess of transparency, she is the one who is the real future of the Republican Party. She can take up the flag where Gov. Blunt left off.
- Steelman’s “Values” video beats Hulshof’s “Values” video. See for yourself, and let me know which you value more.
- Steelman knows how to fight–and, apparently, how to annoy liberal blogs.
- Speaking of liberal blogs… Did you know they sometimes use common sense? Click here to read a recent Fired Up! post in which the author agrees with Steelman’s spokesman.
- Whatever the Club for Growth wants, the Club for Growth gets. (Not convinced? See exhibit A.)
- An endorsement from the Wall Street Journal doesn’t hurt either. Highlights include: “Ms. Steelman is clearly doing something right.” See also: “Her sin is in fact to belong to that new mold of Republican – Louisiana Gov. Bobby Jindal, Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin, Sens. Tom Coburn and Jim DeMint – who know it’s no longer enough to simply hawk lower taxes. In 10 years as a state legislator and treasurer, her target has been the slothful political favor factory that’s led Republicans away from small-government principles and outraged conservative voters.”
- Let’s face it: She’s not just a pretty face. But she is a pretty face.
- The St. Louis Post-Dispatch endorsed Kenny Hulshof. Steelman is still glowing.
- It’s an old quote, but it’s one that’s come up again and again: “My family grows corn, so the idea of high corn prices is appealing to me.” Ouch.
- Lastly, I’ll add only that politics isn’t an exact science. When I was home in Missouri two weeks ago, I met with a friend embedded in Missouri politics. Regarding the primary competition, he said it essentially boiled down to a gut feeling. Despite his history in state politics, my friend says Hulshof is largely unknown, despite his experience. Steelman, on the other hand, has made a name for herself and received national attention in a role that otherwise goes utterly unnoticed. She represents the refreshing change of pace that Republicans have needed in so many campaigns, big and small, across the country.

I would vote for Hulsof.
I’ve met both of them and Rep. Hulsof is much smarter and better spoken than “Legs” Steelman.
My memory is fuzzy, but what vote was it where Steelman stabbed Missouri Senate Republicans in the back? It was kind of a big deal.

Steelman stabbed Missouri Republicans, specifically Republican law-makers, in the back, when as a freshman law-maker she tried to stip the part time law-makers of their pensions. There was also the time where she fillibustered the stadium bill to save tax-payers 500 million dollars, the President Pro-tem at the time was Peter Kinder, and he was the sponsor of that bill. There are other accounts of where she has gone against the republican establishment to, all in an effort to represent the people of Missouri, not the good ol’ boys in Jeff City and Washington D.C.

Yeah, I left the door right open for you there. I should have just looked it up then.
I can’t wait for another pro-trial lawyer politician to take the Gov’s office (sarcasm).
Go Kenny!
