Fact-checking Political Ads
Posted by Katie Favazza - 09/15/08 at 02:09 pmJay Nixon, the Democrat running for Governor in Missouri, recently released this ad:
But in an email to supporters today, Kenny Hulshof’s campaign calls the facts in this ad into question, asserting that “Kenny is the only one in this race with a clear record on helping small businesses and getting our workforce ready for the new economy. He is the only one in this race to put forward a health care plan with a market-based solution for the needy, the uninsured and middle class.”
Here’s how the Hulshof campaign breaks down the facts:
Fact Check: Jay Nixon’s Border States Television Ad
| Claim: | Kenny said, “The state economy continues to be strong,” February 4, 2008. | |
| Fact: | In February, the unemployment rate was 5.4 percent. By July, the unemployment rate was 6.4 percent. In January 2008, 3,300 new jobs were created in Missouri, bringing the total new jobs created to that time from January 2005 to nearly 100,000 new jobs.
Within the context of what was happening at the time, Kenny was correct! (of course!) |
|
| Claim: | The ad states, “Hulshof…..said the economy generally is doing well.” | |
| Fact: | Taken out of context. Kenny was speaking in reference to a recent Ball State study which ranked Missouri as the top manufacturing climate in the country. And, the ad is not using an actual quote from Kenny, but a paraphrase from the reporter. | |
| Claim: | The ad says, “Supports more of those same policies”…11.03.06 Columbia Missourian | |
| Fact: | This quote appears fabricated. It looks to be hearsay from another person speaking about Kenny! Aren’t lawyers supposed to know better? |
