Documentary: Le Cirque
Posted by Katie Favazza - 12/30/08 at 03:12 amA documentary about New York’s premiere fine dining establishment, Le Cirque, aired Monday evening.
The 78-minute documentary Le Cirque: A Table in Heaven follows the restaurant’s father Sirio Maccioni, his wife, and three sons from the 2004 closing in the Palace hotel, to the grand re-opening in the Bloomberg building two years later.
“Sirio Maccioni pioneered a new style of dining in the 1980s, combining four-star food with the celebrity-charged ambience usually found in night clubs. Today, the Maccioni sons are trying to apply the same formula to a younger generation of celebrities with different tastes.”
As the daughter of a restaurant owner and a foodie myself (though I dislike the term, I’ll admit that I am one), I enjoyed the documentary. I would recommend it to anyone, but it’s of particular interest to fellow fans of the TV show “Top Chef” and anyone interested in the food industry or Italian-American history. Brace yourself for some moments of supreme awkwardness, as the cameras don’t shy away from the notoriously tempestuous nature of a family business.
