Catholic U. College Republicans Take Tea Party Movement Door-to-Door

What some might find an oddity was a true reality on a college campus this year’s Tax Day: a group of conservative students standing up against an increasingly powerful government and its out-of-control spending. With tea parties going on all over the country yesterday, Catholic University of America’s (CUA) chapter of College Republicans decided to take up arms and join the cause by spreading the word around campus. The D.C. university called on its members to personally reach out to fellow students about the effort in order to educate young adults on current government affairs.

Alex Smith, Catholic University sophomore and chapter executive board member, said that the College Republicans at CUA wanted to inform the campus about “the problems the ordinary taxpayer never created” like gross national spending and a growing bureaucracy. Smith said that the students’ efforts were inspired by the Boston Tea Party of 1773, and the College Republicans passed out fliers with tea bags attached to them.

The fliers called on students to reach out to their Representatives in support of a “sensible economic agenda” and twelve goals proposed by Americans Solutions and the Nationwide Tea Party Coalition. The twelve goals range from homeowner’s assistance to abolishing the death tax.

About 10 College Republicans participated in the event by passing out the fliers and tea bags door-to-door in various dorm buildings. As for the reception, Smith said, “Everyone has recognized what we’re doing and we’re talking about 18-year-olds who might not even watch the news.” Many students happily identified themselves as conservatives and took the fliers and tea bags in order to learn more and, surely, to get some free caffeine as finals quickly approach. The interest was a great testament to the overall Tea Party movement whose supporters turned out in masses for the nationwide protests.

The CUA College Republicans displayed true dedication to changing Washington’s outrageous spending, like the Fiscal Year 2010 budget. Smith spoke about the effort put forth by her fellow club members saying, “It’s awesome what a simple group of thoughtful individuals can accomplish” by simply speaking with peers.

As for the future, the group plans on continuing their efforts by campaigning for candidates with conservative ideals in the fall elections. You can follow the Catholic University College Republicans’ activities on Twitter by clicking here.
