What does social media say about you?

Many of the political conversations I have had with people on Twitter or Facebook surprise them. Not because of how I say things, but because of my ’side of the fence.’ The comment I get most often is, “You’re conservative? But you’re so involved with social media!” In the beginning, I didn’t understand why people would assume I was liberal because I was active with social media. I even hunted down conservatives on twitter. But, apparently being a blogger, designer and copywriter on in social media lumps me in with the liberals on Twitter.
But, why? Why is it that using social media makes people think I am more liberal? Unfortunately, I don’t know the answer, but maybe you do! Have you dealt with a similar situation? Have you talked with anyone about social media and your political affiliations? I would love to hear your thoughts and what you have experienced.

I find that people automatically assume I’m a Dem because I’m young, socially involved, “green”… I think it’s easy – especially in a post-2008 election world – to assume that anyone new media savvy is lumped in with that group, because that’s what the media focused on for nearly two years during the election cycle. It’s all about newly formed stereotypes and our willingness (as conservatives on a ride range of issues) to fight back against them

Conservatives are old, white guys like me. TMStanton is right. The media has created the stereotype about youth and support for the left. As more and more outspoken young conservatives openly profess their leanings, that perception will change.
