2,996 Too Many: Bloggers Needed to Join Project 2,996 to Honor Victims of September 11th

armsofproject2996

Project 2,996 needs 2,996 bloggers–one for each of the victims of September 11th–who will write tribute posts honoring these fallen, innocent Americans.

On September 11, 2009 the participants of Project 2,996 will join in a massive blogburst. With enough participants I hope we can flood the blogosphere and the internet with the names faces and stories of the 2,996 people who were murdered for doing nothing more than living their daily lives.

Updates to the list of assigned victims are not instant, but it appears that 42 people, or only 1.4 percent of the victims, are claimed as of right now. To sign up, simply post a comment on the 2,996 Project website offering to write a tribute and include your email and a link to your blog. Let me know if you sign up and who you’ll be honoring. If you don’t have a blog and would still like to help, you can do that, too; look for the directions on the 2,996 site, or contact me and I’d be honored to publish tributes on your behalf.

Some of you may have heard of the Project before. I tried my best to help promote it in 2006 and was fortunate enough to get the attention of Michelle Malkin and Mary Katharine Ham. Malkin’s fans flooded the site with so much traffic and created a host of technical hurdles–but it was worth it. The founder of the project, later said that the day Michelle Malkin blogged about it was the day Project 2,996 took on a life of its own.

James R. Paul was one of the victims of the terrorist attacks, and the tribute I wrote back in 2006 still gives me chills. I’ll be reposting it in full on September 11th this year. Please also take a few minutes to learn about Walter Matuza, Donald F. Greene, Giovanna Porras, and Michelle Titolo.

Update: The text above was edited to clarify that folks should post a comment at the 2,996 website to sign up. I will–of course–let the organizers of Project 2,996 know that so many of you are interest in helping out. Special thanks to Michelle Malkin and her readers for supporting the effort again!

I’d be honored if you’d have me as a participant in this Remembrance.

My birthday is 9/11, I have a 9/11 Tat on my back to keep this day in remembrance, and on the flight from Boston, My aunt’s good friend (a teacher) was on that flight.

    God bless America!

    Our Lady of Freedom
    By Philip Damon on 7/4/2009
    ———–
Born in conflict this nation was,
A hope for the world to see.
A fight for freedom from tyranny’s jaws,
By a people who must be free.

A nation to be ruled by a people as one,
    No matter what the cost.
So off we sent our daughters and sons,
That this freedom would not be lost.

    Freedom called, the nations bled,
    As evil played its hand.
So America took this world and led
    The charge on foreign sand.

From France to England to the Philippines,
    Our nation rose as one.
An army of boys still in their teens,
Sacrificed all ‘til freedom was won.

Terror struck our heart one day,
    And mothers learned to weep.
Then American’s rose with one voice to say,
    “Our freedom we will keep!”

Through wars and strife our flag yet stands,
    Its stars and stripes revealed.
Not on our knees nor on our hands
    Will this nation ever yield!

Remember today the cost that was paid,
The price for freedoms held dear.
Many bodies, in graves were laid,
So that our citizens would never fear.

Tyrants and rulers hide in terror,
    As America raises her fists.
    This lady is our standard-bearer
    Flag held by unbending wrists.

Through wars and strife our flag yet stands,
    Its stars and stripes revealed.
Not on our knees nor on our hands
    Will this nation ever yield!

Katie! I didn’t realize you had your own blog!

I just applied to write a tribute for the 2,996 project. I no longer blog at TheWayWeAre for Townhall but had set up an e-zine called “Mishigas Central” which I abandoned when one of my key professional writers developed breast cancer. It has been an orphan ever since but would gladly resurrect it to write a spirited tribute to whatever victim I get assign (assuming I get assigned one).

You may remember that we met at Blogworld in 2007 and you tazed me (kidding) but I blogged about it here:

    http://thewayweare.blogtownhall.com/2007/11/11/blogworld_you__also_have_the_right_to_listen.thtml

Not my best work but I’m not a bad writer. I hope I get assigned one of the 2,996. I’m sure could whip up a spirited narrative about whoever I get assigned, even if it’s the only post I ever make to “Mishigas Central”.

I comment daily on Michelle Malkin’s blog so I’m sure I could direct traffic over to the 2,996 site.

Thrilled to learn you are doing well!

I keep only a private blog for my university students, but I will be happy to write a tribute for any of the 9/11 victims, the innocents who died for being Americans. Their loss is especially painful as we face this administration who seemed determined to destroy what the terrorists did not.

On 9/11, I fell to my knees and wept as the second tower was hit…I had a ob appt that day and was anticipating hearing my unborn sons heartbeat. My husband worked in the Chicago Board of Trade and I was fearful for his safety. I rang his cell, his office and no answer. As I reached the OB appointment, the Pentagon was hit…my husband finally rang me back on my cell and he was safe and on his way home. I was so afraid, in shock, sad and yet grateful when I heard my sons healthy heartbeat. It said to me, while we have lost so tragically, we will beat on…as Americans, as humans …as one nation, under GOD.

I was honored to serve at Ground Zero along with my brothers from so many departments. From this life challenging and altering experience my calling was to dedicate myself to charity and helping those in need in tribute to our loved ones lost on 911. Gear Up Foundation has been in operation since 2002 and continues to make a difference in so many lives including the children of some very poor regions through our fire safety and community service programs. There is no better way to highlight the ultimate failure of the terrorists who struck on 911 than those actions bringing us closer together rather than ripping us apart….. Please visit our site, be generous in your support and never forget… Vinny Forras
