Michael A. Uliano, 1959 – 2001: A Project 2,996 Tribute

A previous tribute for Michael A. Uliano might have said it best:

Michael Uliano probably would have preferred to be somewhere other than at the 105th Floor of the World Trade Center on September 11, 2001. An options broker for Cantor Fitzgerald, Michael enjoyed his work but would rather have been an actor. Surpassing his love of the stage was his love for fishing. To his fishing lure customers on the net he was known as Artie Fishhills, a play on the word artificial because of his knack for tying fishing flies. So if he could have Mike might have been fishing and clamming off Cape Cod in his old ’73 Jeep with the Shark’s mouth grill instead of one of millions of New Yorkers reporting to duty at thousands of desks across the world’s financial nerve center.

Mike was born in Aberdeen, New Jersey and enjoyed time near Cape Cod with family and friends. A jack of all trades, Mike was a hometown football and wrestling star; studied dance and acting; mastered homemade fishing flies; served in the Army–and was even stationed in Germany; and was quite the comedian among his family and friends–and that’s not including his professional expertise that brought him to a job in the World Trade Center, where he was murdered.

Spend but a moment reviewing the comments on his Legacy.com guestbook and you’ll learn that Michael was a man devoted to his family. I’ll admit, I wept when I read these two messages, posted just 4 and 5 months after the Sept. 11 attacks:

your smile, your wit, your passion for everything you did will be missed michael, but never forgotten. you finally became the man, husband, brother, uncle you always wanted and knew you could be. the love you had for linda is what you will feel forever in heaven. believing this to be true gets me through the day. i will hold her dear for you michael. your loving sister, marianne

febuary 2,
today is your anniversary michael,
I sent linda flowers for you. A bouquet of wild daisies and two red roses. Daisies because they remind me of the cape, the roses for the love you and linda shared. I will call her later today and be her shoulder should she need one. rest peacefully michael, love your sister marianne

Mike was the eternal optimist among his family and friends and I pray that they–and that all of us–keep that thoughtful, cheerful disposition alive in his honor.
